CALDWELL, Idaho — David Melfi and Justin Greene each hit a pair of doubles Tuesday night, leading the Mining City Tommyknockers to a 6-5 win over the Canyon County Spuds. (Boxscore)
The Tommyknockers broke open a 3-all game with three runs in the eighth inning. The Spuds responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame, but reliever Dylan Wilhelm slammed the door on the win with a perfect ninth for the save.
The Expedition League win lifts the Knockers to 8-4 on the season.
Greene’s two doubles came during a 4-for-4 performance. He drove in three runs and scored one. Melfi went 2 for 4 with two runs scored. He and Greene hit back-to-back doubles in the eighth inning.
Carter Dobrinski also doubled in Butte’s nine-hit attack. Miles Hartsfield and Luke Trainer added singles. Leadoff man Jack Walker drew a pair of walks.
Starter Drew Leonard threw six strong innings, giving up three runs, only one of which was earned. He scattered four hits. Juan Cerda pitched a perfect inning of relief and got the win.
Cam Grant went 3 for 4 with a triple, double and two RBIs to lead the Spuds.
Game 2 of the three-game Wednesday night. After Thursday’s finale, the Tommyknockers will head to Casper, Wyoming to take on the Horseheads.
