McIver sets Old Works record

ANACONDA — University of Oregon golfer Brandon McIver set a new course record at Old Works Golf Club, firing a 65 from the Slag tees en route to a 135 total for 36 holes during the U.S. Amateur Qualifier on July 15 at Old Works Golf Club.

McIver’s 65 included a five-under par 31 on the front nine, despite a bogey.  His 36-hole total of 135 bested the field by seven shots, qualifying him for a spot in the U.S. Amateur next month.

“Brandon’s round was an amazing feat, and we are proud to have been a part of the history he set today,” stated Ryan Stemsrud, general manager, Old Works Golf Club. “This round will likely hold up for quite some time. We wish Brandon the best of luck at The Country Club next month.”

McIver won the Montana State Amateur last weekend in Helena.

The U.S. Amateur takes place Aug. 12-18 at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass.  The Amateur Championship is the oldest golf championship in the country — one day older than the U.S. Open. Except for an eight-year period, from 1965-72, when it was stroke play, the Amateur has been a match-play championship.

Throughout its history, the U.S. Amateur has been the most coveted of all amateur titles. Many of the great names of professional golf, such as Gene Littler, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Lanny Wadkins, Craig Stadler, Jerry Pate, Mark O’Meara, Hal Sutton, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, grace the Havemeyer Cup.

The Old Works Golf Club has been reborn on the site of Anaconda’s century old copper smelter. The first course ever built on a Federal EPA Superfund site, Jack Nicklaus, the Golden Bear himself, incorporated historic relics into his design of Old Works. Granite slabs from the old mill line the banks of trout filled Warm Springs Creek, protecting the 10th green. Massive stone furnaces border the third fairway, while the 150-foot flue provides a dramatic backdrop to the fourth green.

Old Works Golf Club is managed by Troon. Headquartered in Scottsdale, Ariz., Troon is the world’s largest golf management company also specializing in homeowner association management, private residence clubs, estate management and associated hospitality venues. The company oversees operations at Troon Golf (daily-fee & resort) and Troon Privé (private) properties located in 29 states and 28 countries.
