McGrees, Maroons relay success on Dillon track

DILLON — Well, that is something you don’t see every day.

Four McGrees ran to victory in the girls’ 400-meter relay Saturday to highlight an impressive day by the Butte Central Maroons at the Sheridan Invitational at a windy Vigilante Field.

Sisters Whitney, Rachael and Lindsay McGree and cousin Lacey McGree each ran a leg in the short relay win.

“That is something you don’t see very often, if ever,” BC coach Zach Stajcar said of the McGree relay win. “It was pretty neat.”

The McGrees finished the race in 53.36 seconds. The team from Twin Bridges took second at 54.19.

The Maroons placed third in team standings on both sides. Manhattan swept the team titles.

“Overall, they had a great meet,” the coach said of his girls and boys. “We’ve still got a long way to go with our conditioning, but I’m very happy with their performance.”

Rachael McGree added a victory in the triple jump, leaping more than 31 feet to post the win. She also placed second in the 100-meter hurdles.

“She works hard at it, and it’s good to see her have success,” Stajcar said.

Aidan Dennehy posted a victory in the javelin with a mark of more than 88 feet.

Whitney McGree added a second place in the 100 and a fifth place in the 400, while Lindsay McGree took fourth in the 100 and fifth in the long jump. Abby McGee ran to fifth in the 800.

On the boys’ side, Kyle Schulte threw the javelin more than 143 feet to place second. He also placed fourth in the shot put.

The day included the return to action by BC speedster Kyle Harrington, who suffered a torn ACL on the first game of the football season.

Stajcar said Harrington ran to second in the 100, while Blake Burton ran to fourth. However, Stajcar said the official results somehow listed the BC runners as placing fourth and sixth.

“They both ran really will in the 100,” Stajcar said of his top two sprinters. “Harington ran a great leg in the short relay.”

Nate McGree jumped to second place in the triple jump. Teammate Cole Harper placed fourth in the triple jump and long jump.

Ethan St. John added a third place in the discus, while Brian McGeehan ran to third in the 800 and fifth in the 1,600.

BC will compete at Frenchtown next Saturday.
