Athlete of the Week: Beau McGree Punches His Ticket to State

BUTTE — Beau McGree is headed back to the biggest stage in Class A golf.

The Butte Central junior is this week’s Butte Sports Athlete of the Week after another big performance when it mattered most, punching his ticket to the Class A State Tournament with a runner-up finish at the Western A Divisional.

McGree fired a 76 Saturday at Polson Bay Golf Course, tying Corvallis’ Dylan Wirt and Frenchtown’s Brayden Garr for second place.

Polson’s Max Milton captured the divisional title with a 65, while McGree’s 76 put him right near the top of a field featuring some of the best Class A golfers in Western Montana.

For McGree, the state berth continues what has been an impressive junior season.

He opened the year by winning the Butte Central Invitational and has consistently found himself near the top of leaderboards throughout the fall. Just days before the divisional tournament, McGree shot a 2-over-par 74 to finish third at the Hamilton Invitational.

But Saturday was about more than another high finish.

It was about earning another shot at State.

McGree qualified for the Class A State Tournament last season and came away with All-State honors after tying for 13th. Now, one year older and with another season of experience behind him, he will get the opportunity to tee it up at State once again.

The Class A State Tournament is scheduled for Oct. 2-3 at Marias Valley Golf & Country Club in Shelby.

With his season on the line at divisionals, McGree delivered.

And for punching his ticket back to State with a second-place divisional finish, Butte Central junior Beau McGree is the Butte Sports Athlete of the Week.
