HELENA — Montana Tech golfers Skyler Martin, Emily Garden and Trey Hoagland stood strong on a “brutal” day Monday at the Fighting Saints Classic.
Martin fired a 5-over-par 77 at a windy Meadow Lark Country Club, and the Shelby native sits in a tie for second place heading into Tuesday’s final round. Garden, a fellow freshman from Lolo, hit an 81 to help put the Orediggers in third place and within striking distance of second. (Women’s results; Men’s results)
Garden sits in eighth place on the women’s leaderboard.
On the men’s side, senior Trey Hoagland, a Butte High graduate, followed a 76 with a 72 and heads into Tuesday’s final 18 holes in sixth place at 148.
“Shelby Martin and Emily Garden played great for our women’s team today, especially with how tough that wind made play today,” Tech coach Sean Ryan said. “And Trey Hoagland is in a great spot individually.
“The wind was brutal,” Ryan said. “It was a good 25-30 mph all day and swirling in all directions.”
Lewis Clark State’s Madilyn Brown took the first-day lead with a 75 to lead the Warriors to first place at 309. Lauren Hamm of LC is tied with Martin for second.
Rocky shot a 337 to take over second place. The Battlin’ Bears are five shots better than Tech. Carroll College is fourth at 358.
Also for the Oredigger women, Tanna Campbell hit 90, Lynzee Dexter shot a 94, and Butte High grad Emily Kelly carded a 95.
Rocky shot 290 and 295 to take the men’s lead at 585. LC and Carroll are tied at 611, while Tech is fourth at 618 after rounds of 313 and 305.
Rocky’s Chase Morehouse, who is playing as an individual, hit a pair of 1-under 70s to take the individual lead. Rocky’s Daniel Sigurjonsson is second at 141. Carroll’s Joseph Potkonjak and Rocky’s Jayden Driver are tied for third at 143, and Benjamin Kaul of the University of Providence is fifth at 146.
The Oredigger men have six players who shot at least one round in the 70s over the first two rounds.
Matt Hobbs hit 80-76, Sean Ramsbacher shot 77-80, Brady Cady hit 83-77, Isaiah Weldon shot 79-81 and Ryan Keenan shot 87-78. Weldon, a sophomore from Butte High, and Keenan are playing as individuals.
