Maroons win Windy City volleyball tourney

BELGRADE — The high school volleyball season is still young, but the Butte Central Maroons appear to be in mid-season form.

The Maroons claimed the team title at the Windy City volleyball tournament Saturday at the Belgrade Special Events Center.

The Maroons knocked off host Belgrade 25-20, 23-25, 15-8 in the championship match. BC thumped Livingston in the semifinals 25-9, 25-20 after knocking off Ennis in a seeded game 25-22.

The Maroons went 4-1 in pool play to get that far. BC beat Lewistown 25-14, fell to Havre 25-22, beat Browning 25-8, knocked off Manhattan 25-14, and topped Bridger 25-13.

“It was a great day and a memorable one,” BC coach Becky Hancock said. “In my 10 years coaching in this program I have never seen a team take a tournament. The girls never gave up and they never backed down.”

In the championship match, Teresa Piazzola tallied 13 kills to lead the BC attack. Sierra Pica killed eight in the win, while Lacey McGree killed seven and Emily St. John spiked six. St. John also dished out 28 assists in the chipper.

“Offensively we were on today, with Teresa Piazzola finding her rhythm there on the outside,” Hancock said. “Defensively we did much better with moving our feet with getting to the ball, with libero Mollie Peoples leading the way.”

Peoples registered 22 digs in the championship match. Piazzola also reached double figures in that category with 16. St. John and Taylor Wahl dug eight.

“Strong serving from multiple players was also a big role in our success today,” Hancock said. “We have really been emphasizing staying mentally tough and today we owned it.”

The Maroons will open Southwestern A play Thursday in Dillon. First, it is time for the BC girls to feel good about themselves and celebrate the title.

“I am very proud of these girls,” Hancock said. “Today we take in this moment and then it’s back to the grind next week as we focus in and build going into the start of conference play in Dillon.”
