Maroons weather storm, top Blue Devils

On a day when the Butte Central softball team honored it’s seniors, the Maroons saw their freshman deliver.

A few hours after freshman Corbyn Holm singled in classmate Taylor Wahl for a walk-off win against Hamilton, freshman Mollie Peoples came through in a big way as BC topped Corvallis 13-7 Saturday afternoon.

Peoples, BC’s first baseman, hit two doubles and drove in four runs to lead the Maroons, who overcame an emotional letdown in their second game of the day.

The big hit was a bases-clearing double that put the Maroons on top for good in the fourth inning at a cold and wet Stodden Park.

“I just wanted to do something to help my team,” said Peoples, who drove in three runs in BC’s 6-5 win over Hamilton earlier. “I wanted to step up for my team. I wanted to do it for my seniors.”

Before the game, the Maroons honored seniors Rylee Green, Shelby Paffhausen, Cassidy McGree, Mikayla Boggs and Courtney Thomas and their parents.

Whether it was the high of the Hamilton game or the emotions of Senior Day, BC wasn’t on top of its game against the Blue Devils, who the Maroons easily handled earlier in the season in Corvallis.

Corvallis scored six runs in the fourth inning to turn a 5-1 deficit into a 7-5 lead.

Boggs got the start in the pitchers’ circle, and walked two in the inning. None of the three hits she surrendered in the inning were hit hard.

BC coach Kelci Thatcher replaced the senior with sophomore ace Teresa Piazzola with the game tied at five. Piazzola allowed a pair of runs to score on wild pitches before settling down and regaining the dominant form she had against Hamilton.

“I commend Boggs,” Thatcher said. “She started out the game fabulous. I feel we gave her the short end of the stick. We missed ground balls that should have been outs. She didn’t get pulled because of her fault. Teresa came in and finished, but I’m not taking it away from Boggs.”

The Maroons heated up after the game was delayed for a few minutes because snow started sticking to the field, making it impossible to see the baselines.

When play resumed, Peoples hit a shot to right-center field to score three runs. She added an RBI double to highlight BC’s five-run sixth inning that put the game away.

“She stepped up when we needed her the most,” Thatcher said of Peoples. “She had a great day.”

Boggs, Shawnee Hjelt, Holm, Green, McGree, Boggs and Kate Ossello all hit singles for the Maroons, who also took advantage of seven Corvallis errors. Ossello and McGree each drove in a run.

Kira Doyle and Taylor Gagnon each hit two singles to lead the Blue Devils.

Piazzola picked up the win to improve 8-3 on the season. The Maroons improved their record to 9-5 overall and 7-1 in Southwestern A play with their fourth straight win.

For a while Saturday, though, it looked like that winning streak was about to end.

“After that big win against Hamilton, we kind of let our guard down a little bit,” Peoples said. “We stayed together as a team, and we really fought hard.”

BC has a busy week coming up. The Maroons play at Dillon on Tuesday before traveling to Anaconda on Thursday.

Friday and Saturday, the Maroons close out the regular season when they host the annual Laverne Combo Invitational.

Divisionals is in two weeks in Anaconda, and Thatcher is hoping her team can build on Saturday’s two wins as the Maroons head toward crunch time.

“Senior Day is always tough because girls are upset and sad, but they found a way to win,” Thatcher said. “That is what they have done in three out of four games. Hopefully we can keep this momentum going into the next couple of weeks.”

Poor scheduling….been there done that many times. To go on the road at 5-6am and play 4 games, 2 being conf games is just stupid. Bad for the host schools, worse for the road schools. Nobody can afford a let down this time of year.
