Maroons upset Polson to open State A tourney

HAMILTON — Butte Central softball coach Bill “Chunky” Thatcher likes to point out that n 80-to-1 underdog won the Kentucky Derby earlier this month.

He said his Maroons might be an even bigger longshot than that to win the Class A State title.

Well, the Maroons took a step toward shocking the world this afternoon, knocking off defending champion Polson 4-3 in extra innings to open the State tournament at Field No. 1 of the Hamilton Athletic Complex.

Junior shortstop Brooke Badovinac capped a stellar game with an RBI double to score Sofee Thatcher with the winning run in the top of the eighth inning.

The win sends BC to a 5 p.m. showdown with Northeastern A champion Havre on the same field.

Thatcher reached and took second on a one-out error before Badovinac drove her home. That came just after the Pirates forced the extra inning on a two-out single by Nikki Kendall in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Polson’s Avery Starr singled and her courtesy runner stole second with one out in the bottom of the eighth. Thatcher, though, induced pop outs to Badovinac and first baseman Maggie Stimatz to end the game.

The Maroons took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Badovinac, who went 4 for 4 with a home run, two doubles and two RBIs, led off the frame with a blast to tie the game at 1.

Brenna Foley singled and scored on a Renee Creekmore single to take the lead. Polson tied the game in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by Starr.

Badovinac doubled and scored on an error to give BC and 3-2 lead in the top off the sixth. It looked like that would stand up until Kendall’s clutch hit sent the game to extras.
