Maroons tune up for divisionals in Bitterroot

Butte Central’s tennis team put in a long day on the courts Saturday at the Bitterroot Invitational.

The tournament was played in Hamilton, Corvallis, and Stevensville. Dillon, Whitefish, Darby, St. Ignatius, Anaconda, Libby, Valley Christian and Troy competed along with the Maroons and host schools.

Bryson Sestrich went 3-1 on the day to lead the Butte Central boys. Guido Ossello and Aidan Petritz picked up a doubles win. So did Max Drew and John Fisher.

Tess Riordan and Marissa Anderson went 2-0 in doubles play for BC’s girls. Samantha Burton and Mati McGree each grabbed a singles victory.

“Not too bad of a day, but we still have a big area open for improvement,” BC coach Becky Hancock said. “We just need to make sure we are getting in more consistent reps, more focus and improving our level of play each day at practice. It’s about taking the simplicity of the basic fundamentals of the game and becoming more aggressive as you progress. A lot of times kids just like to jump to the aggressive part and lose site of the fundamentals you need in being consistent and successful.”

Next up for the Maroons is a match against Bozeman’s junior varsity next Saturday. BC will return to the Bitterroot Valley for the Southwestern A Divisional May 16-18.

“These long day tournaments can be hard with all the waiting around, but at the same time good for us since divisionals is similar  just around the corner,” Hancock said.
