Maroons tough on wet courts

If you could ignore the wet, windy weather, Saturday was a beautiful day on the tennis courts for the Butte Central Maroons.

The BC boys racked up two more lopsided wins at Father Sheehan Park, topping Hamilton 6-1 before knocking off Stevensville 7-0.

Butte Central’s girls fell 4-1 to Hamilton and 4-2 to Stevi. BC coach Bernie Carey, though, pointed out the improvement in his girls squad.

Sarah Drew’s two singles victories highlighted the day for the BC girls. The Maroons also got a straight-set doubles win by Ali Guldseth and Kellsie Quinn in a match against Stevensville.

“To get back to back wins from Sarah is an accomplishment that this girls program has not seen in years,” Carey said. “She and the rest of our girls are really coming along.”

On the boys’ side, Northey Tretheway, Kale Guldseth and Jack Gallagher went 2-0 on the day, while No. 1 singles player Derek Ralph went 1-1. One of Gallagher’s wins came by forfeit.

The doubles teams of Jim and Frank Joyce, Koletn LaMiaux and Kaden Peeples, and Patrick Kenney and Tyler Trudnowski all went 2-0 for the Maroons.

“The boys were as solid as usual — couldn’t be happier with the results,” Carey said. “Only dropping one match against two Bitterroot powerhouses like Hamilton and Stevensville says a lot about our team as a whole.  Northey especially had two big wins against some tough competition. Those win will definitely benefit him once the divisional rankings come around. ”

The long day, which came the day after prom, included a pair of delays because of wet courts.

The Maroons are back in action Tuesday when they take on Havre and Lewistown in Great Falls.
