Maroons top Yellowjackets, rain at SWA softball

HAMILTON — It will go down as one of the longest mercy-rule games in history.

Thanks to a long rain delay, Butte Central beat Stevensville 10-0 in a game that lasted about three and a half hours Friday at the Southwestern A Divisional softball tournament. The game, though, was called after five innings thanks to the 10-run rule.

The victory secured BC a berth in next week’s Class A State tournament, which is in Anaconda.

BC will play Hamilton in the semifinals at 4 p.m. The first championship game is set for 4 p.m. The second championship game, if necessary is at 6.

Hamilton knocked off Anaconda Saturday. The Copperheads beat Corvallis in the first round, while Stevensville knocked off Dillon.

Klie Thatcher, Mollie Peoples and McKenzie Gallagher doubled to lead the Maroons. Peoples also hit a single, while Piazzola roped two singles. Taylor Whal, Kassidy Criscuolo and McKenzie Gallager also knocked base hits for BC.

Cammie Beller and Bayleigh Ravenscroft hit singles to lead the Yellowjackets. Those are the only two hits Piazzola surrendered.

The BC pitcher struck out nine batters while improving to 6-1 on the season.
