Maroons top Copperheads in thriller

Two years ago, Mikayla Boggs was wearing a Copperheads uniform.

Early Tuesday evening, the junior right fielder delivered the final blow in Butte Central’s improbable come-from-behind victory over Anaconda in a Southwestern A softball game at Copper Mountain Park.

Boggs singled off former teammate Brooke Chapman to score Katie Hogart from second base, giving the Maroons a 5-4 walk-off win.

“Oh, it’s wonderful,” Boggs said. “It’s just great.”

Boggs’ clutch hit came two batters after Shannon McLaughlin hit a game-tying three-run home run to tie the game a 4.

“Shannon really set the page for that,” Boggs said. “It was gone.”

McLaughlin’s blast scored Danika Neumann and Hannah Stajcar. Neumann reached a hard-hit shot that got past the short stop before Stajcar dropped a bunt down the first-base line for a single. Then McLaughlin, a senior catcher, hit a line-drive, no-doubt shot to left-center field.

“I knew she was going to get a hit,” BC coach Kelci Thatcher said. “She was focused.”

Hogart fouled off four two-strike pitches and drew 10-pitch walk. After Taylor Marthaller flew out with a solid poke to left field, Hogart took second on a wild pitch. She scored standing up when Boggs found the left-field grass on a 1-2 pitch.

“I knew she was going to pitch it to me inside,” Boggs said. “That’s what she did before.”

After Hogart crossed, the Maroons mobbed her before they all surrounded Boggs to celebrate the victory that lifted the Maroons to 3-2 on the season and, more importantly, 3-0 in conference.

“They didn’t give up that whole game,” Thatcher said. “It was awesome to see all of them compete.”

The Copperheads competed to the end, too.

Anaconda broke a 1-all tie with three runs in the top of the seventh inning to take at 4-1 lead.

No. 9 hitter Julia Peterson doubled to start the rally. The biggest hit came from Delanie Chapman, who singled in a run on a the 12th pitch of the battle with BC freshman Teresa Piazzol, who improved to 3-1 with the win.

“I have her at 155 pitches on the game,” Thatcher said of Piazzola, BC’s emerging star  “Early in the season, that’s a lot of pitches. Anaconda, they’re a great-hitting team. They’re very disciplined, and they made Teresa work.”

The game, which was played with a cold, stiff wind from the northwest, was a pitchers’ duel until the disciplined hitters on both sides took over.

BC took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Danika Neumann singled and scored on a wild pitch. She slid home just in front of catcher Courtney Moodry’s toss to the pitcher.

The Copperheads tied the game in the fourth when Bolton walked and scored on a sacrifice fly by Lacee Moodry.

Neumann, Stajcar and McLaughlin each smacked three hits for BC. Hogart, Piazzola and Shawnee Hjelt joined Boggs with one hit.

Brooke Chapman, Delanie Chapman and Sarah Schaefer each had two hits for the Copperheads. Moodry and Karli King joined Peterson with one.

The play of Shelby Paffhausen in left, Aheesh LaBreche at first, Stajcar at second and Hogart at third highlighted BC’s error-free defense.

“The defense made some huge plays, and on the offensive side we executed better than we have the last four games,” Thatcher said.

The Maroons certainly executed when it matter, and it couldn’t have been better for Boggs, who attended Anaconda schools from preschool through her freshman year.

“Last year was a lot worse,” she said of facing her old team. “After the nerves calm down and after you see them it’s no different than any other game … until the end.”

The Maroons are back in action Friday when they play Polson at 6 p.m. in the first day of the two-day Frenchtown tournament.

Butte Central’s Danika Neumann slides home ahead of throw to Anaconda pitcher Brooke Chapman.

Butte Central’s Hannah Stajcar connects for a first-inning single.
