Maroons top Copperheads, claim No. 1 seed

ANACONDA — For the second time in 25 hours, Butte Central’s softball team got some revenge against a rival.

This time it secured the No. 1 seed in next week’s Southwestern A Divisional tournament in Hamilton.

Thursday the Maroons edged Anaconda 3-2 in a conference game at the Charlotte Yeoman-Martin Complex, avenging an April loss to the Copperheads.

Kloie Thatcher hit a two-run single and Emily St. John followed with an RBI double as BC scored all of its runs in the fifth inning to take a 3-0 lead.

Michaela Cortright and Andi Mavrinac singled in the seventh inning. Cortright scored when Kristy Hayden hit a two-out single. Mavrinac followed her home on an error to cut the lead to one.

BC pitcher McKenzie Gallagher, though, got Anaconda leadoff hitter Lacee Moodry to ground out to Thatcher at shortstop to end the game.

Gallagher fanned seven batters and scattered seven hits to improve to 6-3 on the season. She gave up one earned run.

Cortright struck out six Maroons and surrendered six hits and three unearned runs in the hard-luck loss.

Thatcher and St. John each had two hits on the game. St. John’s double was the only extra-base hit of the game. Taylor Wahl and Kassidy Criscuolo added singles for BC.

Shelbie Roche went 2 for 3 for the Copperheads. Randee Jo Johnson and Hanna Schaefer added singles for the Copperheads.

BC, which avenged a loss to Dillon Wednesday in Butte, improved to 8-2 in conference and 9-7 overall. The Maroons will host the annual Lavren Combo Invitational Friday and Saturday at Stodden Park and Father Sheehan Park.

On Friday, BC plays Hardin at 2:30 p.m. before taking on Belgrade at 6. BC plays Whitefish at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The Maroons close out the tournament at 4 p.m. Saturday against Lewistown.

All of BC’s games will be on Field No. 3 at Stodden Park.
