DILLON — The Butte Central Maroons boys’ basketball team went to overtime at 40-40 just hours after the BC girls; team was defeated in OT by the Beavers.  However, the ending was much sweeter as the boys’ team defeated the two-time defending state champion Dillon Beavers 47-43.

In what started as a slow New Years for the Maroons with an 8-0 deficit to start the conference match up. The Maroons fought back, sparked by points from Cade Holter, Matt Simkins and a last-second three by Luke Heaphy to end the first quarter down 10-7.

The second quarter was all Maroons as they came on strong with an 8-0 run of their own and tough defense holding the Beavers to only four points.  Butte Central’s run was fueled by points from Heaphy, Jared Simkins, Dylan Sestrich and Dan McCloskey to finish out the half with a 20-14 advantage.

Both teams came out fighting after halftime as each team scored nine points in the third quarter with six of the Maroons points coming from McCloskey and three free throws from Holter to keep the Maroon lead at six points.  Dillon had more balanced scoring with points from Mike Haverfield, Coby King, Brad Rakich and Jace Fitzgerald.

The Dillon Beavers brought all their stuff in the fourth as they went on a shooting spree scoring 17 points compared to the Maroons 11 points. Butte Central didn’t score any points until 2:33 left in the fourth quarter when Jared Simkins broke the ice with a pair of free throws. With 21 seconds left in the game Luke Heaphy hit the unimaginable 3-pointer and was fouled by Cody King to send him to the line for the four-point play and put the Maroons up by one point.  Dillon was not to be stopped as Clay Allison went to the other end of the court and made a free throw to send the game into OT.  The Maroons had a couple of chances to seal the win in regulation but came up short on both attempts at the basket.

Overtime was controlled by the Maroons with patient offense and tough defense.  Neither team scored until halfway through the overtime period. Heaphy hit two free throws and a bucket and McCloskey through in a pair of free throws as well.  Andrew Lemieux hit a trey for the Beavers with less than a minute remaining but McCloskey hit a third free throw to ice the game 47-43.

Heaphy finished the night with a game-high 20 points. McCloskey joined him in double figures with 11.

Haverfield and Lemieux each scored 13 to lead the Beavers.

The BC boys are home this Saturday in a non-conference matchup against Livingston at 4 p.m. at the Maroon Activities Center.
