Maroons rout Blue Devils

Once they could see through their teary eyes, the Maroons were on top of their game Saturday.

Butte Central’s girls’ basketball outscored Corvallis 17-0 in the first quarter, and the Maroons rolled to a 55-29 Senior Day win at the Maroon Activities Center.

The victory lifted the Maroons to 8-1 in the Southwestern A standings and 13-4 overall. It came after the Maroons honored seniors Hannah Stajcar, Danee Leary, Alysea Pica, Annie Ossello, Danika Neumann, Aleesha LaBreche and Mariah Cooney and their parents in an emotional pre-game ceremony.

So, for the first minute and a half, the Maroons looked a little off.

Then Leary scored the game’s first bucket on a put back with 5 minutes, 28 seconds left in the first quarter. From then on, the Maroons absolutely rolled.

“It was a really emotional night for all of us. It really meant a lot,” Cooney said. “Once it started clicking, everybody got back on the same page. It took us a couple of minutes to get emotionally back into the game.”

Cooney scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. She was one of two Maroons with a double-double. Leary was the other with 15 points and 11 boards.

Danika Neumann and Hannah Stajcar scored eight points apiece, while Alysea Pica scored six and Annie Ossello tossed in two.

“It’s a good time to start picking it up, getting ready for the tournament,” Cooney said. “Everybody can score, and we’re all starting to play well together. It’s all starting to come to us.”

The Maroons led 34-12 at halftime and 44-23 after three quarter.

The Maroons scored 11 straight points in the fourth quarter and led 55-25 when Coach Meg Murphy pulled her seniors for a huge ovation with 3:11 left in the game.

“We moved the ball really well,” Murphy said. “They’re playing together.”

Chandra McCurdy, Shelby Paffhausen, Siera Pica, Tayler Templin, Shawnee Hjelt and Teresa Piazzola also played for the Maroons.

“It’s a good feeling going into the end of the season,” Murphy said. “I’m excited, and I’m excited for them.”

Lakyn Connors scored nine points to lead the Blue Devils, who 0-8 and 1-15.

Butte Central closes out the regular season next Saturday at Anaconda. The Maroons then will be home as long as they stay alive.

The Southwestern A Divisional tournament is at the MAC in two weeks. The Class A State tournament is at the Butte Civic Center.
