Maroons ride second half to 10th win of season

Butte Central used a big second half to turn back Livingston 67-40 in a non-conference game Tuesday night at the Maroon Activities Center.

The Maroons turned up the heat on defense, and BC outscored the Rangers 36-14 after the break.

“Team defense was good in the second half,” BC coach Brodie Kelly said. “We were getting stops.”

The Maroons were also getting buckets.

BC junior Dougie Peoples scored 14 of his game-high 23 points in the second half. Classmate Kyle Holter scored nine points in each half on his way to 18.

Kelly also pointed to the defensive play of Holter.

“Kyle had an unbelievable game,” Kelly said. “He was lights out on both ends. He had some crazy offensive rebounds and hustle plays that were huge momentum plays for us.”

Central led 16-14 after the first quarter, and BC took a 31-26 advantage into halftime. From there, it was all BC.

Bryson Sestrich joined Peoples with three 3-pointers on his way to nine points. Eric Loos, who had another big night on the boards, scored eight points. BC got three points form Joseph Sehulster and two apiece for Zane Moodry and Drew Badovinac.

Jack Keeley, George Riojas, Riley Gelling and Gage Guldseth also played for the Maroons, who improved to 10-1 on the season.

Kelly said Sehulster’s night cannot be measured by his points alone.

“He’s done a good job on the glass for us,” Kelly said, adding that Sehulster, a senior, is really settling into his role as a contributor off the bench. “That was the key for us was rebounding. Livingston crashes hard.”

Payton Kokot scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half.

“That team is good. They beat Laurel and Hardin last week,” Kelly said of the Rangers. “They’re solid. This Kokot kid is a good player. He’s one of the top dudes in A.”

Livingston (5-6) also got seven points from Drew Rogge, five from Kaden McMinn and two apiece from River Smith and Colter Edwards.

The game was the first of three this week for BC, which heads to Corvallis on Thursday. The Maroons will play at home against East Helena on Saturday.

Central will head to Livingston Feb. 5 for a rematch.
