Maroons ‘ready’ for divisional tennis

Butte Central’s tennis team heads to Corvallis Thursday hoping to build on what has been a strong season on the courts.

The three-day Southwestern A divisional begins at 1 p.m. Thursday. It continues at 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

“We are as ready as we’ll ever be,” BC coach Bernie Carey said. “This team has made incredible improvements since the beginning of the season. The kids have finally found their identities as tennis players, and I am confident in them and their games.”

The BC boys hit the road with tons of potential.

Patrick Kenney is the No. 1 singles player for BC. No. 2 player Jesse Reinke has had a big season, especially late in the year. Frank Hendrickson and Bryce Noctor round out the singles lineup.

Kale Guldseth, who has experience playing deep in divisional tournaments, will team with Tyler Trudnowski as BC’s No. 1 doubles team. Sam Sterns will team up with Sam Joyce, while Devin Maloughney will play with Yulong Lin.

Butte Central will bring a full girls’ squad to divisionals for the first time in years.

Mederios Babb, Sarah Drew, Kellsie Quinn and Mary Beth Lyons will play singles for BC.

Ali Guldseth and Ryan Trudnowski will team up for doubles in the postseason. Kaylee Simkins will play with Kara Criscuolo, while Megan McPherson and Kathie Matthias will make up a doubles team.

The top four singles and doubles teams advance to the state tournament.

Carey said the Maroons are hitting the road with some big-time plans.

“As long as we play with confidence and aggressiveness, we can definitely be contenders come championship Saturday,” the coach said.
