Butte Central’s tennis teams opened the season three weeks late Saturday afternoon at Father Sheehan Park.

As it turns out, the wait was well worth it.

The Maroons boys and girls each knocked off Hamilton 4-3 in Southwestern A duals.

“I was pleased with what I saw today for our first meet,” BC coach Becky Hancock said. “Coming away with wins on both sides is a great way to start the season.”

The match of the day saw BC junior Manuel Gonzalez, a foreign exchange student, beat Alex Raymond in a 2-6, 6-4 7-6 (7-3) thriller. Raymond placed second at the Class A State tournament last May.

The match lasted 2 and a half hours.

“It was a pretty intense match against two great players and a strong win for Manuel,” Hancock said. “I am looking forward to watching him make a big run on the singles side this season.”

Theron Nelson picked up a straight-sets victory in No. 4 singles.

Colby Kline and Shane Callahan grabbed a win at No. 2 doubles, while Aidan Petritz and Braden Harrington won at No. 3 doubles.

In a junior varsity match, Max Drew and Coyt Stajcar of BC won a pro-set match.

On the girls’ side, BC got singles wins from Zoe Sullivan, Samantha Burton. Tess Riordan and Sophie Sullivan picked up a win at No. 2 doubles.

“The girls’ side saw some solid play from the singles side, and that is exciting to see,” Hancock said. “The doubles side only came away with one win, but played hard and will only get better as the season continues. There is a lot of promise on the girls’ side for some great things to happen this year.”

The Maroons will play against Bozeman’s junior varsity team Thursday in Bozeman. BC is back at home next Saturday against Corvallis.
