Maroons open softball season with two losses

POLSON — Butte Central’s softball team did not pick up a win Saturday at the Polson Softball Complex.

The Maroons fell 11-2 to Polson before dropping a 9-0 darkness-shortened game against Columbia Falls.

BC coach Bill “Chunky” Thatcher, however, said he was pleased with his team that got on an actual softball field for the first time this spring.

“We lost two games. I didn’t think we were going to go up here and win two games. We haven’t been outside,” Thatcher said. “Overall, I was happy. Not too many are happy after losing two, but I am.”

BC’s first-year head coach got the chance to see what his team can do on the diamond, and he said the Maroons have some building blocks for a solid season.

“Everybody got in, everybody got swings. That’s what I was looking for,” Thatcher said. “We’ve got some things to shore up on. That’s what I wanted to do. We’ll be there in the end. I’m not worried about it.”

The Maroons will have time to work on those things. They are not back on the field until April 6, when they play host to Livingston at Stodden Park.

The roof caved in on the Maroons as the Pirates scored seven runs in the fourth inning to break open a close game.

Central took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Maddi Kump walked and took third on a double by Maggie Stimatz. Kump then crossed the plate when Brenna Foley grounded out to short stop.

Thatcher said starter Maci Reopelle was throwing well before the “skin came off her finger.”

Central got a run back in the fifth when Kathryn Lalicker singled, stole a base, advanced on a pass ball and then scored on an error. The Pirates, though, added four runs in the bottom of the inning.

Foley, Sofee Thatcher and Mia Keeley added singles for the Maroons in the loss.
