Maroons make long trip to State golf

Four Butte Central golfers are making a nearly 1,000-mile trip to the edge of Montana and back this week for the Class A State golf tournament.

The two-day competition begins at 9 a.m. Friday at the Sidney Country Club.

Seniors Bryan Arnold and Tyler Kump and sophomore Tyge Yelenich will play for the Butte Central boys. Freshman Tricia Joyce will represent the Maroons on the girls’ side.

Senior Sam Joyce also qualified for the tournament at last week’s Western A Divisional tournament at Fairmont Hot Springs. Joyce, though, won’t play this weekend.

Yelenich and Tricia Joyce both won three tournaments on the season. That includes the divisional tournament for Yelenich. He shot an 80 at Fairmont before beating Hamilton’s Josh Heath in the first hole of a sudden-death playoff.

Last year Yelenich finished two shots out of All-State recognition and tied for 19th place after a disappointing second day. The top 15 players are named All-State.

A new individual champion will be crowned because last year’s winner, Anaconda’s Caleb Stetzner, and will play Class B golf with the Copperheads in the spring.

Coral Schulz of Whitefish will be back to defend her girls’ title. Schulz won the Western A Divisional on Saturday. Joyce placed second.

Hamilton’s boys and Whitefish’s girls are the defending team champions. The Maroons don’t have enough players competing to register a team score.
