Maroons fall on court, eye improvement

The short-handed Butte Central tennis teams saw their season-opening action end with losses to Missoula Loyola Tuesday at Father Sheehan Park.

Loyola swept the boys’ match, winning 7-0. On the girls’ side, Loyola won 3-1.

Both BC squads were at less-than-full strength because many players didn’t have the mandatory 10 practices completed to compete.

“The good thing is that it’s just the beginning,” BC coach Bernie Carey said. “It can only get better from here.”

The Maroons lone win came as a surprise to Carey.

Freshman Ran Trudnowski and her doubles partner Sarah Drew, a sophomore, knocked off Loyola’s Tyler Bostwick and Kenzie Wells 8-2.

“When Ryan and Sarah came off the court with all smiles telling me they won, I thought I was getting April fooled again,” Carey said. “What a great accomplishment and start to the girls season.”

Central’s Ali Guldseth and Kellsie Quinn dropped a close doubles match to Mattie Kaleva and Kelcey Daily.

Missoula Loyola’s Kelcey Daily, daughter of Butte native Fritz Daily, returns a shot against Ali Guldseth and Kellsie Quinn.

Maroon Mederios Babb returns against Loyola’s Olivia Rounds.

Singles players Mederios Babb and Larysa Blavatski played their first ever high school tennis matches. Both fell to Olivia Round, Loyola’s top singles player.

The BC boys had a rough showing on the cool, breezy day.

“I’m kind of at a loss for words,” Carey said. “I knew Loyola had a solid program, but I thought we could grind out a couple wins today.”

BC’s Patrick Kenney serves during the first set against Loyola’s Kalen Christian.

Patrick Kenney, BC’s No. 1 singles player, dropped an 11-9 tiebreaker to Kalen Christian.

Jesse Reinke, Bryce Noctor and Devin Maloughney also fell in singles matches for the Maroons.

Seth Powers and Ian Campbell put up a strong doubles showing, falling 8-5 to Turn Hruby and Alex Menendez. The doubles teams of Sam Sterns and Sam Joyce, and Jim Martz and Youlong Lin also competed for the Maroons.

BC is back in action Friday when the Maroons play host to Hamilton.
