Maroons fall in double overtime

HAMILTON — A strong second-half comeback wasn’t quite strong enough for the Butte Central boys’ basketball team Saturday.

The Maroons overcame a 10-point halftime deficit in the Southwestern A game before falling 57-53 in double overtime.

“The guys battled hard,” BC coach Brodie Kelly said following the Maroons’ first loss of the season.

Butte Central actually took a six-point lead late in the fourth quarter, but costly turnovers by BC and a couple of clutch 3-pointers by the Broncs sent the game into overtime tied at 48.

The Maroons made just 2 of 6 free throws in the first extra frame, and the game went to double overtime tied at 52. The Broncs outscored BC 5-1 in the second OT for the win.

Josh Heath scored 16 points to lead the Broncs, who got 13 points from Carter Kearns.

Tanner Kump scored all of his game-high 19 points in the second half after the Maroons struggled with Hamilton’s zone defense in the first half.

Nate McGree added 18 points, 11 of which came in the second half. BC also got eight points from Cole Harper, four from Sam Johnston and two from Riley Richardson and Archie Petritz.

The Maroons, who fell to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in conference, will return to action Thursday when they head to Dillon for a Southwestern A tilt with the Beavers.
