Maroons eye trip to state

The Butte Central volleyball team heads to Whitefish looking to earn a berth into the Class A State tournament.

The Maroons open the Western A Divisional volleyball tournament Thursday at 10 a.m. against Libby. (Bracket)

The winner of the match plays again at 6 p.m. Thursday. The loser heads to a 10 a.m. Friday loser-out match. The top four teams move on to the state tournament, which is next week in Bozeman.

First up is a tall task for the 11-5 Maroons, who placed fourth at last week’s Southwestern A District Tournament in Dillon. The Loggers cruised past Whitefish for a 25-15, 25-11, 25-17 victory in Saturday’s championship match of the Northwestern A District Tournament in Libby.

Mehki Sykes tallied 17 kills to lead the Loggers in that win. Jayden Winslow added 10 kills and three blocks.

The Maroons head to Whitefish looking to book their first trip to state since they placed third in Bozeman in 2015.

Central doesn’t have a single senior on its roster as it makes its way through the postseason. Juniors Emma Keeley, Cassidy Strizic, Tess Riordan, Sophie Sullivan and Makala Doherty are the elders on the BC squad. Sophomores Sophia Burton, Allyson Mueller, Avery Kelly, Amira Bolton, Madison Kump and Marissa Anderson are also key contributors.
