The Butte Central Maroons did battle with Lone Peak this afternoon and were able to get that ever elusive first win of the season, but not just any win, the first in Butte Central program history.
The Maroons had a very pesky start to the beginning of season due to weather and cancellations and at one point played 4 in a row just to get somewhat caught up. They have forgone most of the non-conference games and played what they can of their conference games to this point.
The Maroons were 0-8 heading into the afternoon with 3 games remaining. They were able to edge out a 5-4 victory over Lone Peak led behind the bat of 8th grader Gunnar O’Brien who went 2-3 at the plate and a run.
It was head coach Richie O’Brien’s first win as a varsity head coach as well as the programs. Butte Central is quite freshman heavy but they show a lot of heart and want to get better each game they play.
Coach O’Brien said “I am just so proud of the fight they showed today. I couldn’t be happier for these young men. They have worked their butts off this year and keep getting better as the experience comes. Rye Doherty showed patience and a lot of guts out there today, when things didn’t go our way, he led us right back to where we needed to be. The bats didn’t quite show up, but timely defense and great pitching led the way for a win.”
The Maroons will see Lone Peak again, Belgrade and Browning all next week. They will see Belgrade the 10th, Lone Peak the 11th both of which are home games, and then head to Browning on the 13th to finish out their first ever regular season.
