Maroons, Bulldogs pile up wins at Missoula meet

MISSOULA — Butte High and Butte Central athletes combined to win 16 events Thursday at a three-team meet hosted by Missoula Big Sky at Missoula County Stadium.

Butte High posted nine victories, while Butte Central tallied seven. (Complete results)

Butte Central junior Cutter Thatcher posted a pair of wins. He won the 400-meter race and jumped to victory in the long jump. Thatcher’s long jump mark of 21 feet, 3 inches reaches the qualifying standard for the state tournament.

However, coaches still are not certain that the qualifying marks will count because the meet was hand timed because of technical issues. They fear since some of the meet can’t count, none of it will.

Butte High’s Gabbie Parinin (16-8 ½) and Butte Central’s Rileigh McGree (16-6 ½) and Lindsay McGree (16-4 ½) also reached qualifying mark in the girls’ long jump.

Josh Neil ran to victory in the 100-meter race for Butte High, while teammate Quinn Sullivan topped the field in the 110-meter hurdles.

Neil also ran a leg as the Bulldogs won the 400- and 1,600-meter relays. Tommy Mellott, Tucker Winston and Jake Vetter also ran a leg in both relays.

Mellott placed second in the 100 and 200 for Butte High. Also for the Bulldogs, Sean Foley ran to second in the 800, Aidan Pezdark placed second in the shot put, Jack Boone took second high jump and Keagan Gransbery finished second in the pole vault.

Bulldogs Zach Merrifield (200), Morgan McClernan (800), Billy Cunneen (1,600), Konor McClafferty (shot put) and Rylan Richards (high jump) each took third in their event.

Butte Central got victories on the boys side from Aaron Richards in the shot put, Ryan Wahl in the discus, Cade Holter in the javelin and Thomas McGree in the triple jump. McGree also placed third in the long jump.

Along with the qualifying mark and fourth place in the long jump, Lindsay McGree won the 100-meter race for BC. Rileigh McGree placed second in the triple jump and long jump and third in the 100-meter hurdles. BC’s Cheyanne Parks took third in the 400.

Parini won the long jump for the Bulldog girls, who also got victories from Anna Trudnowski in the high jump, Brenda Fode in the 200 and Hailey Nielson in the 800.

Parini, Ally Cleverly and Taylinn and Braleigh Garrett won the 400 relay for Butte High. Cleverly also took second in the 100.

Hailey Herron placed second in the shot put and third in the discus, while Butte High teammate Christiana Beierle took second in the high jump and third in the pole vault. Butte High’s Gabby Habberman placed second in the pole vault, and Allyson Mueller placed second in the javelin.

Also for Butte High, Danika Murphy ran to third in the 300 hurdles, and Beth Sampson took third in the shot put.

Because of the technical difficulties, results from the meet were not available until this morning.

The Bulldogs will compete again in Missoula against Hellgate and Sentinel on Tuesday. They’ll travel to Great Falls the following Saturday.

The Maroons will compete in Belgrade’s meet on Saturday. That event has been moved to Bozeman. BC will also go to Tuesday’s Florence/Darby meet in Corvallis.
