Maroon tennis teams split in home debut

Butte Central’s tennis teams finally got to play on their home courts Saturday, finding mixed results in a pair of Southwestern A meets.

BC’s boys and girls both fell 6-1 to Corvallis before bouncing back with wins over Hamilton at Father Sheehan Park. BC’s boys used three forfeits in a 7-0 win over the Broncs, while the Maroons girls eked out a 4-3 victory.

The No. 1 BC boys’ doubles team of Guido Ossello and Aidan Petritz went 2-0 on the day. The duo beat Jaymark Liedle and Ryan Hubbard in a 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 thriller before cruising past their Hamilton counterpart in straight sets.

“Guido Ossello and Aidan Petritz overall had a successful day, with their thriller match taking place in the first round this morning against Corvallis,” BC coach Becky Hancock said. “It took them awhile to wake up, but once they got going it was fun to watch, and a great win for them.

“They are really starting to gel out there as a doubles team, and were having fun. After dropping the first set, they really kicked it in gear and never looked back. They have that determination and mindset of wanting to win and being able to execute to get it done in pressure situations, which is always good to see.”

David Granell and Max Drew won straight-sets singles matches against Hailton. Gage Guldseth beat Hamilton’s Ryan Jordan in a 6-4, 2-6, 11-9 battle.

Tricia Joyce, Central’s No. 1 singles player, won two quick matches in straight sets to lead the Maroon girls.

“Tricia Joyce on the girls side also saw an overall successful day,” Hancock said. “I am really liking what I am seeing from her. She just has that grit of tough, competitive play. Every match she has played is hard fought, with her becoming more and more aggressive with her shots. Each match she just continues to improve, and that’s exactly what you want to be seeing.”

In the win over Hamilton, BC’s No. 1 doubles team of Shea Davis and Prestynn Weldon edged Lauren Kimzey and Claire Matthews in a 6-4, 4-6, 10-3 contest that proved to be the difference for BC.

Tess Riordan and Sophie Sullivan won in straight sets at No. 2 singles. Delaney Hasquet and Avery Kelly did the same at No. 3.

“Overall, we struggled as a team against Corvallis but bounced back against Hamilton,” Hancock said. “I think each meet you get to see a lot of things as a coach and even as a player that you need to work on. Today gave us a chance to see some of those things that we are improving in and areas that need improving.”

The Maroons will eye more improvement Tuesday when they play host to Stevensville at 3 p.m. at Father Sheehan.
