LAUREL – Butte Central junior Ella Moodry won her second state Class A girls’ javelin championship and schoolmate Kyle Holter placed in two events during Friday’s first day of the 2023 state Class A high school track meet.
The meet is being held this weekend in conjunction with the state Class C meet at the Laurel Sports Complex. It will continue Saturday with field events at 9 a.m. and running events going off at 10.
Moodry’s throw measured 133 feet, 8 inches and second-place Daeja Fike of Laurel, also a junior, threw 131-1. It was a reverse finish from 2022 in Butte when Fike won with 142-8 and Moodry was second with 132-9. Moodry won her first state javelin crown as a freshman in 2021 with a throw measuring 125-10.
Holter, a senior, placed in both the high jump and the long jump for the second consecutive year. He cleared 6-0 Friday to tie Tristan Anderson of Libby for fifth place. He also got over 6-0 last year, which tied him for fourth. His long jump on Friday was 20-9 ½ and got him fourth place. He was only an inch behind third-place Dayrion Beard of Laurel. Last year, Holter marked 21-5 ¾ and took second place.
Team leaders in Class A are the Corvallis boys and Hamilton girls while Class C is being led by Manhattan Christian in the boys’ events and Plentywood in the girls.’
Taylee Chirrick of Roberts set two Class C records with times of 56.69 in the girls’ 400-meter dash and 2:12.97 in the girls’ 800-meter run.
The former records were by Kourtney Danreuther of Big Sandy, 56.74 in the 400 in 2007, and Sariah Maughan of Seeley-Swan, 2:13.89 in 2022.
Plentywood star Annie Kaul cleared 11-6 for a new record in the Class C girls’ pole vault and Brooke Reuter of Savage broke her own records in the 100 and 200 during prelim heats. She clocked 12.35 and 25.33 after first breaking the records last year.
