Maroon comeback falls short in district opener

FRENCTHTOWN — Butte Central’s comeback attempt fell just short Friday at the Southwestern A District volleyball tournament.

The Maroons nearly overcame a 2-0 hole before falling 25-16, 25-20, 21-25, 24-26, 15-12 to Stevensville in the opening round.

BC will play in a loser-out match at 10 a.m. Saturday.

“These girls played their heart out today,” BC coach Becky Hancock said. “They left everything out there. Things just didn’t go our way in the last five points.”

Cassidy Strizic paced the Maroons attack with 12 kills, while Kassidy Criscuolo collected 30 digs to lead BC’s defense.

Olivia Bolton tallied eight kills and 14 digs, while Megan Michelotti registered seven digs and one and a half blocks.

Sophia Burton (22), Bolton (14) and Emma Keeley (11) reached double figures in as the Maroons totaled 101 digs.

Keeley also handed out 18 assists. Bolton assisted on 13.

The top four teams advance to the Western A Divisional tournament next week in Butte, so BC’s season is on the line in the morning match.

“We gotta pick up the pieces and take that drive into tomorrow morning,” Hancock said. “That game is our ticket into Divisionals. If we played like we did today, we got this.”
