The Butte Central M Club will hold its fifth annual dinner on Saturday, Sept. 8 at the Maroon Activities Center. The event starts with a cocktail hour at 4 p.m. followed by a dinner at 5 o’clock.
The M Club pays tribute to all former Butte Central letter-winners in all sports. The event also honors one former school graduate who helped contribute to Maroon athletes. Former winners of the M Club Award include Brother Patrick McCormack (1944), Bernie Boyle (1971), Harp Cote (1942) and Don Peoples (1957).
In addition to the M Club award, each year a number of former teams are honored at the banquet and also during halftime of a Butte Central football game. This year the Maroons will battle Billings Central on Sept. 8.
There will be 10 teams that will be honored at this year’s M Club festivities. Eight of the squads are former state champions.
The teams to be honored include four football teams. The 1942, 1952 and 1972 clubs all won state championships. The 1992 won their divisional title and played in the state finals.
There are three basketball teams that will be recognized. The 1982 girls’ basketball and the 1992 boys’ basketball teams both won state titles. The 1962 boys’ club made it to the state semi-finals where they lost a controversial one-point game to Missoula County.
The 1982 boys’ and girls’ track teams won state titles on the same day. Butte Central was the first school in Montana to win a boys’ and girls’ state title at the same track meet.
The final team to be honored is the 1972 boys’ cross country team. They won the state title in Helena.
Reservations for the 5th annual M Club dinner can be made by calling the Butte
Central Foundation office at 723-6706.
