Luke Thatcher’s team wins regional

Former Butte High assistant coach Luke Thatcher guided the River Valley Blackhawks to the Wisconsin Division 3 Regional boys’ basketball championship Saturday.

River Valley, from Spring Green, Wis., beat Dodgeville 60-57 in Saturday’s title game. Gale DeVita scored 14 points to lead the Blackhawks. Tayt Caraway added 11 points, while Brandon Gilbeck scored 10.

Next up is the Divisional 3 Sectional tournament, where the River Valley team will try to qualify for the state tournament. River Valley (16-8) opens the tournament Thursday against Lodi (23-1).

Thatcher is in his first year as the head coach at River Valley. He coached under his father, John Thatcher, as an assistant with the Butte High boys’ basketball team for several seasons.
