Western AA contenders Missoula Hellgate and Helena Capital advanced to the state Class AA high school girls’ basketball third-place contest with loser-out wins on Saturday morning.
Hellgate topped Great Falls High 40-25 in the Ross J. Richardson Memorial Gym at Butte High School the same time that Capital beat Kalispell Glacier 56-36 in the Butte Civic Center. The third-place was set for Saturday at 5 in the Civic Center.
Senior Kylie Lunday scored 15 points and hauled in 10 rebounds, and freshman guard Addie Heaphy tallied nine as Hellgate took an early lead and maintained mostly about 10-point difference through the remainder of the game. Senior Emma Blakely and freshman Bailee Sayler each scored seven points, and the 6-foot Sayler also grabbed eight rebounds.
Great Falls High completed a 9-16 campaign and was led in its finale by Jorgie Hawthorne with eight points, and Morgan Sunchild and Erin Watt with six apiece.
Capital also took an early lead and added to it in drumming the Wolfpack out of the tournament. The Bruins bounced back well from an emotional semifinal round loss to rival Helena High late Friday night to gain a spot in the consolation final. Dani Bartsch had 12 points and seven rebounds, and Emily Kidder had 10 points and three steals to lead the Capital win. Ten Bruins scored during the game.
Glacker finished a 15-10 season and was led in its last game by Raley Shirey with 12 points.
