The 2019 South West Montana Junior Golf Tour will open the season with the Big Kahuna close to heart.
Tour founder Bob Wengel announced Sunday that the first tournament has been renamed the Lee LaBreche Kick-Off Classic. The tournament will be played on Monday, June 10 at the Highland View Golf Course.
In addition to serving as Montana Tech’s head golf coach, LaBreche, well known as the “Big Kahuna,” was the longtime SWMJGT tournament director. He passed away unexpectedly in February. He was 55.
“What a loss for the area junior golfers, Montana Tech and the Butte community,” Wengel said.
The event will kick off the eight-tournament season. Registration for the tour is now open at swmjgt.com.
The tour will include stops at the Butte Country Club, Fairmont Hot Springs, Deer Lodge, the Highland View Golf Course Par 3, Great Falls and the Anaconda Country Club before concluding with the Old Works Championship on Aug. 12.
Curtis Smith, Butte High School’s assistant golf coach and long-time volunteer for the SWMJGT, has stepped up and will serve as the tour’s tournament director. He will orchestrate all eight tournaments.
Isaiah Weldon, a current member of the Montana Tech golf team, will serve as the tour administrator. Weldon is a past Butte High boys’ golf team captain, past Butte Junior Golf Foundation Scholarship winner and past tour champion.
