Junior tour kicks off despite wind, rain, snow

The 11th season of the South West Montana Junior Golf Tour started in football weather Monday during the Butte “Kick-Off” Classic a the Highland View Golf Course.

The tournament saw 33 players brave the windy, wet conditions. An all-out snow storm hit the course just as play concluded. (Complete results)

Emily Kelly was the lone Butte player to take home a title in the tournament that opened the seven-stop tour. She fired an 83 to win the Lydia Ko Division for Girls 16-17.

Fellow Butte golfer Grace Luoma took second in the division with a 96.

Helena’s Sarah Halferty won the Lexi Thompson Division for girls 14-15 with an 88. Butte’s Ella Prigge took second at 95. Butte’s Kodie Hoagland finished third at 101. She was followed by Butte golfers Kennedy Lean and Megan Savage at 101 and 103.

Townsend golfer Dakota Trinity Wilson shot a 49 over nine holes to win the Stacy Lewis Division for girls 12-13.

The best round of the day belonged to Helena’s Gavin Anderson. He shot a 9-over-par 77 to win the Dustin Johnson Division for boys 16-17. The course was playing as a par 68 because of construction on the hole No. 9/18.

Butte’s Carsten Quam took second at 81. He was followed by Butte’s Dan McCloskey at 83.

Brett Stoos of Helena shot an 88 to win the Jordan Spieth Division for boys 14-15, while Helena’s Joseph McGreevey shot a 40 over nine holes to win the Rickie Fowler Division for boys 12-13.

Clancy’s Colin Field took second in the young division at 41. Butte’s Zane Moodry placed third at 45.

The tour’s second stop will be June 19 at the Silver Bow Open at the Butte Country Club.
