Joyce second, Yelenich fifth at Butte Central Invitational

The high school golf career for Butte Central freshman Tricia Joyce got off to a pretty good start Monday at the Butte Central Invitational.

Maroon sophomore Tyge Yelenich, meanwhile, proved his strong freshman season wasn’t a fluke.

Joyce fired an 85 at the Highland View Golf Course to place second at the tournament. Sydni Rosa of Hamilton took home medalist honors with an 82.

Only two girl golfers shot in the 80s, with Frenchtown’s Jamie McNally placing a distant third at 94.

Yelenich placed fifth on the boys’ side with a 3-over-par 73.

Hamilton’s Josh Heath won the tournament title with a 2-under 68. He was followed by Will Holloran of the Bozeman junior varsity team at 70. Livingston’s Colton Oopelt and Hamilton’s Max Toenjes tied for third at 73.

The Bozeman JV team won the meet with a 304. Hamilton placed second at 306, followed by Livingston at 317 and Polson at 325. The host Maroons finished fourth with a 329.

Seniors Bryan Arnold and Tyler Kump each shot 84 for the Maroons, while sophomore Cameron Johnson shot an 88. Junior Frank Dwyer carded a 92. Only the top four scores count in team standings.

Butte High’s JV shot 348, with Marcus Lynch leading the way with an 83. Kaden Hanni hit 87, while Levi Loggins shot 88, J.J. Mohr carded 90 and Kellen Lean hit 91.

The Maroons also fielded a JV team, with Zach Luebeck hitting 94 and Jake McPherson shooting 97. Also for the BC JV squad, Patrick Dolan shot 102, Riley Richardson hit 105 and Sam Sterns fired a 107.

Only two schools had enough golfers for two girls’ teams. Frenchotwn shot 389, while Dillon hit 351.

Next up for the Maroons is Friday’s Park Invitational in Livingston.
