Butte High Bulldog, Jonas Sherman sits with coach Luedtke, Coach Wetzel, his brother Scott, mom Cindy and Dad Chris, as he signed his national letter of intent to play hoops with the United States Coast Guard Academy NCAA DIII Men’s Basketball program this week.
Jonas is a three-sport athlete at Butte High School where he played football, basketball, and track; but that is not all Jonas has done at his time at Butte High, Jonas is also stellar academically he is a 2023 Butte High Valedictorian.
I caught up with Jonas on what it means to be able to continue his basketball career, “It’s awesome, it’s been a dream of mine from the first time I picked up a basketball, so it really is a dream come true.”
When I asked where he was going to play, he said he will probably be playing some forward, it’s pretty incredible when young student athletes like Jonas can perform above and beyond in the classroom and excel and balance sports at the same time, Jonas believes it will be able to help him with his “mission “the Coast Guard offers and allow him to balance life at the next level. “I had to put a lot of thought and research into it, but ultimately what made me choose US Coast Guard Academy was the Mission.”
When asked why he chose USCGA he said, “All of my choices had lots of pros, so it came down to the mission of the Coast Guard matching my personality better than West Point or Montana Tech.”
Jonas plans to get right to it after high school graduation “I get on the plane on June 22nd and Swab Summer (basic training) which is 8 weeks of training on June 26th.”
Jonas plans to study Mechanical Engineering and get into flight school upon graduating the USCGA.
Covering Jonas and Butte High this year was a blast and Jonas always carried himself so well, he is humble and a great teammate and an even better human. Jonas and his family have been nothing but supportive and great to deal with, we wish you nothing but the best going forward Jonas.
