Johnson starts season on Triple-A DL

Rob Johnson is an El Paso Chihuahua.

The Butte native and pitcher in the San Diego Padres system will begin the season on the disabled list for the Triple-A club in the extreme west end of Texas.

Johnson’s father, Bob, said Rob has a sore arm and is resting after his first spring training as a pitcher. Rob Johnson is scheduled to begin throwing lightly again on Thursday.

Johnson, a 2001 Butte Central graduate, signed with the Padres earlier this year after playing professionally as a catcher since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2004 draft by the Seattle Mariners.

He played for the Mariners, Padres, Mets and Cardinals. Johnson was a member of the World Series St. Louis team last season.

The Chihuahuas open the season Thursday in Reno, Nev.
