Johnson smacks three hits in Redbirds rout

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — On a day when all eyes in Cardinal Nation were on the St. Louis catching situation, Rob Johnson had a big day.

The Butte native, who caught and batted eighth for Triple-A Memphis Sunday, went 3 for 4 with a double, a run scored and three RBIs to help the Redbirds beat the Nashville Sounds 13-3.

Johnson’s big game came as news broke that Cardinals All-Star catcher Yadier Molina received good news on an MRI of his sore right knee. The leading vote getter for the National League All-Star team said he’s is hoping to return to the Cardinals’ lineup on Tuesday. He said he’s been playing with a sore knee that got worse on Friday.

Johnson, who has been viewed as a mentor for the Cardinals’ pitching prospects, is now batting .236 on the season. He has seven home runs, eight doubles and 32 RBIs in 59 games. He is hitting an even .300 in July.

The Redbirds start a three-game home series against Omaha on Monday.
