JUPITER, Fla. — Butte native Rob Johnson went 1 for 2 with a single for the St. Louis Cardinals in a 10-7 spring training loss to the New York Mets today.
Johnson, who played for the Mets last year, relieved starting catcher Yadier Molina. He was charged with one passed ball.
Johnson is now batting .192 on the spring. He’s 5 for 26 with two doubles, one home run and four RBIs.
The 2001 Butte Central graduate is likely to open the season at Triple-A Memphis. The Cardinals are likely to go into the season with Molina, 30, as the starter and 26-year-old Tony Cruz as the backup.
Johnson, though, will likely be the first player called up to the big leagues if the Cardinals need a third catcher, according to one report.
The Memphis Redbirds open the season April 4 at home against Oklahoma City. The Redbirds play in the Pacific Coast League.
