Concussion sidelines Johnson

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Redbirds placed catcher Rob Johnson on the seven-day disabled list Sunday.

The Butte native was injured in Friday night’s win over Sacramento. Bob Johnson, the catcher’s father, said Johnson was hit on the head by a broken bat while catching Friday. The hit to the head caused a slight concussion. Bob Johnson said his son will travel with the team later this week.

The Redbirds travel to Tacoma, Wash., for a four-game series starting Thursday. They start a four-game set next Monday in Salt Lake City.

Johnson, 30, is hitting .187 with two home runs for the Triple-A team of the St. Louis Cardinals. He has been lauded for the work he has done with the pitching staff at the Triple-A and big league level.
