Johnson home run leads Redbirds to 1-0 win

NEW ORLEANS — Rob Johnson’s batting average hasn’t take off yet.

The Butte native, though, had the only hit that mattered Thursday as the Memphis Redbirds beat the New Orleans Zephyrs 1-0. Johnson hit a home run in the second inning.

The blast was the second of the season for Johnson, a former Seattle Mariner, San Diego Padre and New York Met. The Redbirds are the Triple-A team for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Johnson went 1-3 on the night. His batting average is .182. Both of his home runs are off New Orleans pitcher Elih Villanueva.

Johnson also caught the distance as Michael Wacha, Keith Butler and Victor Marte combined for to strike out five in the shutout victory.

The Redbirds and Zephyrs continue their series on Friday.
