Johnson ejected, featured in St. Louis paper

It was an up-and-down weekend for Rob Johnson.

The Butte native was ejected from a Triple-A game in Albuquerque, N.M., and featured in a story in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch all in the span of about 12 hours.

In the newspaper story that came out Sunday morning, Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright called Jonson a “shepherd” because the Triple-A catcher is helping develop minor league players into big leaguers.

“He’s a question-asker by nature,” Wainwright said. “He loves picking brains about every topic. Sometimes he knows the answer and he’ll come up to and ask the question to see what you say. He’ll have a trick to it.”

Johnson was ejected during a fight Saturday during the Memphis Redbirds’ 13-10 loss to the Isotopes. The fight led to eight ejections, including the managers from both teams. Click here to read more about Saturday’s game.

Johnson’s father, Bob, said the catcher was not injured in the fight, which he called “not your everyday brawl.”

“He was just protecting his own,” Bob Johnson said. “Remember, he is from Butte.”

Johnson is not in the lineup Sunday night in Albuquerque.
