Johnson belts HR in win over Mets

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Maybe Rob Johnson showed his old team what its missing today in a spring training game.

The Butte native hit a home run off New York Mets pitcher Dylan Owen as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Mets 11-4.

Johnson’s blast, which rose his spring training average to .214, comes less than a week before the Cardinals open the season Monday in Arizona. It was Johnson’s second home run of the spring.

Johnson, 30, appears to be headed to Triple-A Memphis. That he’s playing with the big league club this late in the spring — and hitting home runs — has to be a good sign for the 2001 Butte Central graduate.

The game was broadcast live on ESPN.
