John Thatcher offers basketball development

John Thatcher sees too many of our area basketball players not reaching their full potential. So, the retired coach has decided to do something about it.

For the first time, Thatcher is offering a summer of individual fundamental basketball developmental sessions for boys and girls in sixth through 12th grade.

“I don’t see kids developing their skills,” Thatcher said. “So I need to work on that. Kids go to camps and they play a lot of games. They don’t develop their skills.”

Thatcher’s sessions will specialize in helping players do just that, and players under his tutelage will be able to utilize his coaching knowledge that dates back to 1969. They will emphasize ball handling, shooting, post play and passing.

“If they want to get better,” Thatcher said, “I think this is a great opportunity.”

The 90-minute sessions will take place Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at the Maroon Activities Center and McKinley Gym from May 19 through Aug 28. Individual workout times can be negotiated.

Thatcher retired as head coach of the Butte High boys’ program after the 2009-10 season. He led the Bulldogs to the Class AA state championship game in 2004 and 2007. The 2004 team ended a 13-year state tournament drought for the Bulldogs.

Thatcher, who won a state title as a head coach in Las Vegas, led Butte Central to the 1978 state championship. He also was an assistant for head coach Kelvin Sampson at Montana Tech in the early 1980s.

Even though he is retired from full-time coaching, Thatcher is never far away from the game.

Thatcher is currently the color man for the radio broadcasts of Butte High and Montana Tech basketball games on KBOW. He is also a part of the sports talk show Overtime on KBOW on Wednesday nights.

Cost for Thatcher’s fundamental sessions are $50 per week or $20 per session. To sign up, call Thatcher at 490-7182.
