ISU’s Mendenhall, NAU’s Kemper earn VB honors

OGDEN, Utah — Idaho State’s Lori Mendenhall and Northern Arizona’s Sydney Kemper have been named the Big Sky Conference Volleyball Co-Players of the Week for the matches played the week of Sept. 3-9. This is Mendenhall’s second career POTW and Kemper’s first.

Mendenhall, a junior from Salt Lake City, Utah, led ISU to a Keiser Classic title and earned tournament MVP honors over the weekend. The Bengals went 3-0 at the tournament defeating St. Francis College (3-0), Fairleigh Dickinson (3-0) and St. John’s (3-1).

The setter led the Bengals with 121 assists, averaging 12.10 assists per set. She also recorded 11 kills, 21 digs, two service aces and three total blocks at the tournament. Against St. John’s she posted a double-double with 47 assists and 12 digs.

Kemper, a sophomore from Albuquerque, N.M., averaged 2.55 kills and 1.18 blocks per set while hitting .351 to lead NAU to a 2-1 record at the Molten Classic Presented by Hilton Garden Inn. The Lumberjacks defeated UC Riverside (3-0) and Pennsylvania (3-1) but lost to California (1-3).

On Friday against UC Riverside, Kemper hit .571 with nine kills and added six block assists and two service aces in just three sets. She hit .263 with eight kills and two blocks over Pennsylvania and had 11 kills and five blocks on a .292 hitting percentage against Cal. Kemper entered the week leading the Big Sky with a .402 hitting percentage.
