BELGRADE — Butte High graduate Taylor Huff helped the Captain Matt Saltz Army team win the title at the 6th Annual Veterans Memorial Softball Classic Saturday at the Belgrade High School Softball Complex.
Huff went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two runs scored as Army beat the Sergeant Trevor Johnson Marines team 10-0 in the championship game. The victory avenged a 6-5 loss to the Marines earlier in the day.
Former Frenchtown star Kasidy Yoeman went 3 for 3 with four RBIs and two runs scored from the leadoff spot in the title game. She hit a walk-off double to end the game by the 10-run rule in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Huff, batting No. 2 in the lineup, drove Yeoman in with singles in both of her at bats.
Belgrade pitcher Erin Elgas struck out eight batters and scattered three hits in five innings of shutout ball.
On the tournament, Army also beat the 2nd Lieutenant Robert McCormick Air Force 10-4, topped the Coast Guard 12-9. Army beat the Lieutenant Jack Rittichier Coast Guard Team 17-6 and 12-9.
Huff, who batted first, second, third and fifth in the Army lineup, went 6 for 13 with a home run, a double, six RBIs and 10 runs scored in five tournament games. She also played solid defense at shortstop throughout the tournament.
Following the title game, Huff was presented a sportsmanship award.
Fellow Butte High graduate Brittney Tierney was selected for the tournament but did not play.
