Holdsworth adds win as Bulldogs have good day

BOZEMAN — Another individual win by Thad Holdworth highlighted the day Saturday as Butte High’s swimming team continued to make strides at the Bozeman Invitational.

Butte High’s girls placed fifth, and the Bulldogs swam to sixth. Butte High had just 15 total swimmers, eight girls and seven boys, competing.

“We are working hard and swimming best times, or close to them,” Butte High coach Lynn Shrader said. “I couldn’t be prouder of how hard they are working and swimming.”

Gallatin’s boys claimed the team title with 272 points. Billings Skyview scored 206 points, followed by Billings West at 168, Bozeman at 138, Belgrade at 131, Butte at 118 and Billings Senior at 55.

Holdsworth, a senior won the 200-yard freestyle with his best time. He also placed second in the 100 breaststroke to pace the Bulldog boys.

Junior Ladd Hutchinson took second in the 200 individual medley and fifth in the breaststroke, while sophomore Kershaw Mellot swam to sixth in the 100 freestyle and ninth in the 50 free.

Senior John Vandekop placed seventh in the 500 freestyle.

Mellott, Hutchinson, Holdsworth and Vandekop teamed to swim to third place in the 500 freestyle relay. Mellot, Jack Luoma, Hutchinson and Vandekop took fifth in the 400 freestyle relay.

Senior Kinzie Mason placed fourth in the 100 freestyle and seventh in the 100 backstroke to lead the Butte girls. Senior Carley Trefts placed seventh in the 200 and the 100 breaststroke.

Junior Alex Kovnesky placed 10th in the 100 freestyle.

In the 200 medley relay, Mason, Trefts, Kovnesky and Ireland Johnston placed eighth. Kieyerah Killoy, Jerica Hamberg, Traci Johnson and Brianna Komm took eighth in the 200 freestyle.

Skyview won the girls’ team title with 340 points. West was next at 333, followed by Bozeman at 186, Senior at 159, Butte at 86, Gallatin at 73 and Belgrade at 24.

The Bulldogs’ next two meets will be at home. They host the Mining City Invitational next Saturday. The Butte Invite is Jan. 28.
