BOZEMAN — Hailey Hoagland fired an up-and-down 73 Thursday at the Riverside Country Club to take the first-round lead at the Bozeman Invitational.
Hoagland overcame a triple bogey and four three putts with four birdies to finish the round at 2 over par. The Butte High junior leads Billings Senior’s Kortney McNeil by one shot. Coral Schulz of Capital sits in third at 76.
Butte High sophomore Shaelyn Hafer sits in eighth place at 81.
The Bulldogs shot a 349 team score, with Hailey Ogolin carding an 89, and Butte High is third after the first round. Billings West leads the tournament at 325, 10 shots better than second-place Billings Senior.
Billings Senior and Billings West shot lights out on the boys’ side. The Broncs and Bears are tied at 298, nine shots better than Helena Capital.
West’s Austin Berg shot a 1-under-par 69 to take the lead. He’s three shots better than Senior’s Sean Benson, West’s David Follett and Billings Skyview’s Cole Lorenz.
Despite having four golfers break 80, Butte High’s boys sit in fifth place with a solid 309.
Ty Muprhy led the way with a 75, which puts him in a tie for 10th place. Mike Jankovich hit 77, while Trey Hoagland carded a 78 and David Starcevich fired a 79.
Friday’s final round starts at 9 a.m. The boys and the girls will play at the Bridger Creek Golf Course.
