Hoagland tied for second halfway through Big I

BOZEMAN — Butte High graduate Hailey Hoagland is tied for second place after the first round of the Big I Junior Golf Classic at the Bridger Creek Golf Course.

Hoagland, 18, shot a 2-over-par 73 Wednesday and is tied with 16-year-old Teigan Avery, the defending Class AA high school champion from Kalispell, for second place. Carol Schulz, 16, of Helena fired a 72 to take the lead.

Saidie Crippen of Missoula sits in fourth at 76. She is followed by Bailee Dexter of Townsend at 78, Kortney McNeil at 80 and Shaelyn Hafer of Butte at 81.

Billings golfers Patyon Stott and Sean Benson lead the boys’ 16-18 division at 69. Helena’s Barron Culver and Kalipell’s Cody Sherrill are next at 70.

The top two boys and girls earn a berth in the National Championship in Bridgeport, West Virginia. That tournament is Aug. 5-9.

The Trusted Choice Big I Junior Classic is one of the largest tournaments in the country with more than 4,000 boys and girls competing throughout the United States.

Hoagland, who graduated earlier this month after a stellar career at Butte High, will play golf for the University of Montana this coming school year. Hafer, 17, will be a senior for the Bulldogs.
