Hoagland third at Big I tourney

BOZEMAN — Butte golfer Hailey Hoagland placed third at the Big I Junior Golf Classic Thursday at the Bridger Creek Golf Course.

Hoagland followed Wednesday’s first-round 73 with a 77 for a 150 total, missing a trip to the national tournament by four shots.

Kalispell’s Teigan Avery, the reigning Class AA high school champion, shot a 3-under-par 68 Thursday for a 1-under total of 141. First-day leader Carol Schulz of Helena followed a 72 with a 74 for a 146 and second place.

Avery and Schulz earned a berth in the National Championship at the Pete Dye Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia, Aug. 5-8.

Butte’s Shaelyn Hafer placed seventh. She followed a first-day 81 with an 82 for a 163.

Hoagland will play for the University of Montana in the upcoming school year, while Hafer will be a senior at Butte High.

Bozeman’s Tate Tatom won the boys’ division with an even-par 142. He shot 71 both days to beat Billings golfer Payton Stott by one shot. Stott followed a first-round 64 with a 74.

Billings’ Sean Benson, who shot a 69 Wednesday, hit 76 Thursday and placed third at 145.

Tatom and Stott advance to the national tournament.
