GREGSON — With medalist Hailey Hoagland leading the way, the Butte High girls’ golf team captured the Butte High Invitational title Friday at the Fairmont Hot Springs Golf Course.
Hoagland, a senior, fired a final-round 77 — one day after shooting a 78 — for a 155 total. She beat Billings Senior’s Kortney McNeil by three shots. Kalispell Glacier’s Teigan Avery placed third at 163.
Lightning ended Friday’s round early. Most players had two holes left — some had three and a couple had four — when the players were called in. With a slow-moving thunder storm approaching, coaches and officials decided to have each player take a par on all unfinished holes.
Butte High sophomore Shealyn Hafer followed Thursday’s 86 with an 82 for a 168 and sixth place.
The Bulldogs’ 683 team score easily topped second-place Billings Senior’s 709. Helena Capital placed third at 712.
Sophomore Hailey Ogolin shot an 86 Friday for a 176 total, while senior Megan Ingersoll added an 88 and a 184 for the Bulldogs.
Bozeman’s boys won the team title with a 613. The Hawks topped Hellgate by one shot, so the finish, which didn’t sit well with all players and coaches, could have helped determine the champion.
Billings West and Billings Senior tied for third at 620.
Missoula Hellegat’s Pat Colberg won medalist honors with a 144 after a 4-under par 68 on Friday. He topped Great Falls High’s Cody Babinecz by two shots.
Butte High’s boys finished back in the pack with a 652. Sophomore Trey Hoagland shot a 75 Friday for a 15 total to lead Butte High.
Bulldog sophomore Will Kilmer carded a final-round 74 for a 160, while Houston Green finished at 168, Levin Mullaney carded a 169 and Andy Kelly shot 178.
